Motion Language Principles

## Motion as Communication Animation is honest when it communicates state. Animation is dishonest when it seeks attention. ### Canon Timing - `--duration-micro: 200ms` — hover states, toggles - `--duration-standard: 300ms` — modals, transitions - `--duration-complex: 500ms` — orchestrated sequences One easing: `cubic-bezier(0.4, 0.0, 0.2, 1)` Consistent motion creates coherent language.

Claude Code as Zuhandenheit

## Zuhandenheit (Ready-to-hand) When a tool works perfectly, it disappears into use. The hammer vanishes during hammering—you see only the nail. Claude Code aims for this transparency: infrastructure that recedes so only the work remains. **Vorhandenheit** (present-at-hand) occurs at breakdown—when the tool fails, we suddenly *notice* it. This noticing enables understanding. The goal: tools that recede into Zuhandenheit, with graceful breakdown that teaches rather than frustrates.

“I want to build bridges between people and machines”

The ongoing development of artificial intelligence is often presented as a race between humans and machines. ETH professor Menna El-Assady takes a different approach: as head of the Interactive Visualization and Intelligence Augmentation Lab at ETH Zurich, the young scientist wants to develop an AI that can be used interactively and that shapes its capabilities only in collaboration with humans.

Towards AI Search Paradigm

In this paper, we introduce the AI Search Paradigm, a comprehensive blueprint for next-generation search systems capable of emulating human information processing and decision-making. The paradigm employs a modular architecture of four LLM-powered agents (Master, Planner, Executor and Writer) that dynamically adapt to the full spectrum of information needs, from simple factual queries to complex multi-stage reasoning tasks. These agents collaborate dynamically through coordinated workflows to evaluate query complexity, decompose problems into executable plans, and orchestrate tool usage, task execution, and content synthesis. We systematically present key methodologies for realizing this paradigm, including task planning and tool integration, execution strategies, aligned and robust retrieval-augmented generation, and efficient LLM inference, spanning both algorithmic techniques and infrastructure-level optimizations. By providing an in-depth guide to these foundational components, this work aims to inform the development of trustworthy, adaptive, and scalable AI search systems.

Deleuze and the Map-Image: Aesthetics, Information, Code, and Digital Art - Jakub Zdebik - Google Libros

The map, as it appears in Gilles Deleuze's writings, is a concept guiding the exploration of new territories, no matter how abstract. With the advent of new media and digital technologies, contemporary artists have imagined a panoply of new spaces that put Deleuze's concept to the test. Deleuze's concept of the map bridges the gap between the analog and the digital, information and representation, virtual and actual, canvas and screen and is therefore best suited for the contemporary artistic landscape. Deleuze and the Map-Image explores cartography from philosophical and aesthetic perspectives and argues that the concept of the map is a critical touchstone for contemporary multidisciplinary art. This book is an overview of Deleuze's cartographic thought read through the theories of Sloterdijk, Heidegger, and Virilio and the art criticism of Laura U. Marks, Carolyn L. Kane, and Alexander Galloway, shaping it into a critical tool through which to view the works of cutting edge artists such as Janice Kerbel and Hajra Waheed, who work with digital and analog art. After all, Deleuze did write that a map can be conceived as a work of art, and so herein art is critiqued through cartographic strategies.

Pivot — Objectspace

During the pandemic, a focus on how we could happily live and work in smaller spaces became a critical issue. Along with cultural trends (like Marie Kondo), a burgeoning housing crisis, and a growing impetus to live with minimal environmental impact, a trend has come to the fore for architectural designs that reject expansive living in favour of condensed, highly functional spaces (that can still spark joy). Motivated by Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s relatively poor density score and our fraught proclivity for suburban sprawl, Raimana Jones’ design ethos is centred on multi-functional pieces designed with intention – furniture as mini-infrastructure. For the Objectspace courtyard, Jones has designed a tiny space that can function as a dining room, work study, and social gathering point. On a recent trip to Japan, Jones encountered the concept mottainai, meaning ‘no waste,’ which is reflected in Japanese architecture and everyday living. Sparsely furnished rooms with sliding partitions offered flexible living spaces that could be easily adapted to different functions. Jones noted the way that even the train lavatories were designed with this no-waste efficiency in mind, integrating soap, water, and hand-drying into a single unit. Pivot proposes an alternative model to density – essentially through unifying architectural structural elements with built-in furniture attached to a central column. Responding to the limited footprint of denser developments like townhouses, this approach negates the need for complex joinery of free-standing furniture by using the structural framework of a building to do the heavy lifting, such as fixing into studs. Pivot advances an efficient system from a design and fabrication point of view.  Responding to the necessity that our living conditions evolve as conditions change, the rotating elements of Pivot draw down from the central column to maximise the area, while incorporating Jones’ eye for material combinations, colour and composition. Pivot draws inspiration from domestic and public space to maximise a small footprint and create a playful, mobile intervention for visitors to activate. — Jones worked with Alistair Munro (The Alistair Munro Design Company) to deliver Pivot. Munro focussed on the detailed design and fabrication of the plywood and Critical Cleanstone components, to realise Jones’ vision. Munro is a Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland-based designer and maker, with a multi-modal process informed by materiality and collaboration. The production of Pivot was also supported by Steve Brookbanks of Object Support. — After pursuing a traditional architecture education followed by the requisite stint working for large architecture outfits, an invitation to teach design studio and technical papers inspired a shift for Raimana Jones. All spare time became filled with hands-on making in the university workshop, fostering a material-led design approach that soon informed Jones’ founding of Atelier Jones Design. In his work, Jones aims to express both the practical and artistic qualities of materials. By embracing the constructive and poetic aspects of the medium at hand, Jones creates furniture, interiors and objects that speak to both his aesthetic and a restrained functionality. Jones is also a Professional Teaching Fellow at the University of Auckland – School of Architecture and Planning. —  Objectspace’s Courtyard Plinth Commissions are supported by the Jan Warburton Charitable Trust.

Objectives

The scientific core of this application is the generality of understanding the making process, as the purposeful interaction of the mind with the world through senses and actions. Formal representation of knowledge is essential for reenactable preservation, but also computational understanding of human creative tasks, enabling us to provide more specific tools for its aid. Generative, realistic reenaction (simulation) and simulated imagery allows to assess the correctness of the representation of elusive concepts such as tacit knowledge. Craft-specific simulation is a powerful tool for learning but also optimising workflow efficiency. Short-term predictive imagery of intended actions can be seen as a “precautious undo” for mistakes in work of risk.

Lessons From Swiss Style Graphic Design — Smashing Magazine

My notes: • in what ways does the International Style consider the user? The International Style is user-friendly. It achieves it by uniformity and geometry (abstract geometric patterns and unconventional color patterns), white space (moments of breath in midst of information and emphasize hierarchy), grid systems (a rigid framework that gathers information in a meaningful, logical and consistent organization on a page and help users to better understand), structured information (semantic organization of chunks of data and hinting at how they relate to each other), invisible typography (e.g. using sans instead of serif to keep the vessel not expressive), using font size as a hierarchy tool (therefore guiding the users' eyes). • explain "semantic organization" The semantic organization of data which, despite not being inherent to the use of the grid, is a big part of the Swiss Style’s essence. It's grouping data and information of similar hierarchy together in a well-structured format. It alludes to the connection between data in a chunk and suggests their inherent connections.

Material-based design computation, Neri Oxman

The institutionalized separation between form, structure and material, deeply embedded in modernist design theory, paralleled by a methodological partitioning between modeling, analysis and fabrication, resulted in geometric-driven form generation. Such prioritization of form over material was carried into the development and design logic of CAD. Today, under the imperatives and growing recognition of the failures and environmental liabilities of this approach, modern design culture is experiencing a shift to material aware design. Inspired by Nature's strategies where form generation is driven by maximal performance with minimal resources through local material property variation, the research reviews, proposes and develops models and processes for a material-based approach in computationally enabled form-generation. Material-based Design Computation is developed and proposed as a set of computational strategies supporting the integration of form, material and structure by incorporating physical form-finding strategies with digital analysis and fabrication. In this approach, material precedes shape, and it is the structuring of material properties as a function of structural and environmental performance that generates design form. The thesis proposes a unique approach to computationally-enabled form-finding procedures, and experimentally investigates how such processes contribute to novel ways of creating, distributing and depositing material forms. Variable Property Design is investigated as a theoretical and technical framework by which to model, analyze and fabricate objects with graduated properties designed to correspond to multiple and continuously varied functional constraints. The following methods were developed as the enabling mechanisms of Material Computation: Tiling Behavior & Digital Anisotropy, Finite Element Synthesis, and Material Pixels. In order to implement this approach as a fabrication process, a novel fabrication technology, termed Variable Property Rapid Prototyping has been developed, designed and patented. Among the potential contributions is the achievement of a high degree of customization through material heterogeneity as compared to conventional design of components and assemblies. Experimental designs employing suggested theoretical and technical frameworks, methods and techniques are presented, discussed and demonstrated. They support product customization, rapid augmentation and variable property fabrication. Developed as approximations of natural formation processes, these design experiments demonstrate the contribution and the potential future of a new design and research field.

"An astute observer might observe...the debilitating effects of writing upon the collective practice of memory... But it was hardly possible to discern the pervasive influence of letters upon patterns of perception and contemplation in general. Similarly, today we are simply unable to discern with any clarity the manner in which our own perceptions and thoughts are being shifted by our sensory involvement with electronic technologies, since any thinking that seeks to discern such a shifts is itself subject to the very effect that it strives to thematize."

Derived Principles

Negative Space

Let elements breathe. Absence is presence.

Monochrome First

Color as emphasis, not decoration.

Typography as Structure

Type creates hierarchy without ornament.

Purposeful Motion

Animation reveals state, guides attention.

Taste is not imitation. References reveal the aesthetic; implementations express it.
